Science and religion have often
been viewed as opposing forces. However, in Islam, there is a strong emphasis
on seeking knowledge and understanding the world around us. The Quran and
Hadith (sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad) provide guidance on various
scientific topics, and many Muslim scientists have made significant
contributions to various fields. Here are some examples of science in the light
of the Quran and Hadith.
The Quran mentions the process
of fetal development in detail, centuries before modern embryology. Surah
Al-Muminun 23:13-14 states, “We created man from an extract of clay. Then We
made him as a drop in a place of settlement, firmly fixed.” This accurately
describes the process of fertilization and the implantation of the fertilized
egg in the uterus.
The Quran also describes the
water cycle, stating in Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:18, “And We send down from the sky
rain charged with blessing, and We produce therewith gardens and grain for
harvests.” This accurately describes the process of evaporation, condensation,
and precipitation that is essential for life on earth.
The Hadith mentions the
importance of cleanliness and hygiene, centuries before the discovery of germs
and bacteria. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Cleanliness is half
of faith.” This emphasis on cleanliness and hygiene is reflected in the Islamic
practice of ritual ablution (wudu) before prayer, which involves washing hands,
mouth, nose, face, arms, head, and feet.
Islamic scholars have also made
significant contributions to various scientific fields. For example, Al-Hasan
Ibn al-Haytham (known as Alhazen in the West) was a Muslim scientist who made
significant contributions to the fields of optics and mathematics. He is often
referred to as the “father of modern optics” for his work on the properties of
light and the development of the camera obscura.
In conclusion, science and
religion are not necessarily opposing forces. In Islam, there is a strong
emphasis on seeking knowledge and understanding the world around us. The Quran
and Hadith provide guidance on various scientific topics, and many Muslim
scientists have made significant contributions to various fields. As Muslims,
it is our duty to seek knowledge and use it to benefit humanity.
